Whitmer Announces Garlin Gilchrist II as Running Mate - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE POSTED ON AUGUST 20, 2018 BY ADAM FOX-LONG Whitmer Announces Garlin Gilchrist II as Running Mate Gilchrist represents next generation of rising Democratic Party leaders   DETROIT — Today Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gretchen Whitmer announced Garlin Gilchrist II as her running mate in the 2018 election. Gilchrist has a proven background in technology and community organizing that will help move Michigan’s government into the 21st century and get things done for families across the state. Gilchrist was born in Detroit and attended Detroit Public Schools until his family moved to Farmington when he was [DATE REMOVED] old. After graduating high school, he went on to graduate from the University of Michigan School of Engineering on a full academic scholarship. After college, he moved to Washington to work as a software engineer at Microsoft and serve as the Social Media Manager for the 2008 Obama campaign. Gilchrist also worked as a community organizer in Washington, D.C. at the Center for Community Change and MoveOn.org, where he spearheaded projects to protect and expand Medicaid. In 2014, Gilchrist and his wife, Ellen, made the decision to move back to Detroit to raise their family and help contribute to the future of the city. He served as the Detroit’s first-ever Director of Innovation & Emerging Technology and created a system for Detroiters to report problems in their communities, from potholes to broken street lights to clogged storm drains. “I’m so proud to partner with Gretchen as we work together to build a better Michigan for everyone,” said Gilchrist. “I was born in Detroit. I love this state, but like many young adults, after I graduated from U of M, I left Michigan behind for better opportunity. In 2014, my wife Ellen and I made the affirmative decision to come back to Detroit to help rebuild our city, to help repair our state, and to raise our children as Michiganders. I’m humbled and honored to join Gretchen Whitmer on the campaign trail, to bring people together from the UP to Detroit to solve problems and get things done for my children and for yours.” Gilchrist and his wife Ellen are the proud parents of twins Garlin III and Emily. “Garlin Gilchrist is a proven problem solver. He shares my commitment to public service, dedication to family, and love of Michigan and I’m proud to have him as a partner,” said Whitmer. “Garlin came back to Detroit and got to work solving problems that actually made a difference in people’s lives – from designing a system to report potholes, to fixing broken fire hydrants, to making city government more open and transparent. He is exactly the kind of young, innovative, and progressive problem-solver I need working with me in the governor’s office to move our state government forward and get things done for Michigan families, like fixing the damn roads, cleaning up our drinking water, repealing the retirement tax, and making sure every Michigander has a great public education that gets them on a path to a high wage skill.” The Michigan Democratic Party will vote on the Lieutenant Governor nominee at [DATE REMOVED]’s convention in East Lansing. ### Share this post: Share Tweet Email Post navigation  Previous Post Whitmer Proposes Three Debates Focused on Education and Skills Training, Clean Water and Infrastructure, Affordable Health Care Next Post   Michigan FOP endorses Whitmer for governor Meet Gretchen Meet Garlin Issues News Volunteer Events Media Store Donate JOIN GRETCHEN Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Medium P.O. The Opioid Crisis - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE The Opioid Crisis HOME ISSUES THE OPIOID CRISIS The opioid crisis attacking our communities is a tragedy and a disease. Overdose deaths in Michigan from opioid abuse jumped 54% in just [DATE REMOVED]. We cannot blame the victims of this disease. We must put aside partisan differences to confront this crisis head on. In Michigan, we must take action immediately to: Expand treatment and recovery services. that help our family members and neighbors who are suffering from addiction. I will bring together community partners, medical professionals, state leaders, the federal government, and health providers to increase inpatient treatment services. Partner with law enforcement and pharmacies to continue building on and expanding permanent drug take-back programs to dispose of unneeded controlled substances. Invest in treatment courts to ensure access to the resources we need to treat addiction, including diversion and alternative sentencing. As Ingham County Prosecutor, I established policies to make sure that people with addictions could get connected to treatment, instead of going to jail. As Governor, I will continue to fund and support treatment courts. Hold physicians and drug companies accountable because Michigan has more annual opioid prescriptions than people, and we cannot allow pharmaceutical companies to continue perpetuating the crisis with immunity. Women's Rights - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE Women’s Rights HOME ISSUES WOMEN’S RIGHTS When women thrive, we all thrive. However, women of Michigan have been held back by an economy and a state government that does not treat them as equals. Women still struggle with inequity in Michigan’s economy, earning just 74 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn for the same work. When women fight for fairness, the legislature responds by passing anti-women laws. I will stand up for women and turn Michigan into a model state for equality. READ GRETCHEN’S FULL PLAN As Governor I will continue to fiercely defend the rights of every Michigan woman, including for women’s access to all forms of reproductive care, contraception, and maternity care, paid family leave, and equal pay. The day after the inauguration, I rallied more than 9,000 people at the Capitol to fight back against Donald Trump’s attacks on women and families. As Senate Democratic Leader I led the fight against Republican efforts to erect more barriers for women in their health care. On the floor of the state legislature, I shared my own story of surviving sexual assault to speak out for all the women they silenced by refusing to hold a single public hearing. As Ingham County Prosecutor I implemented a new domestic violence unit, and am committed to bringing together university officials, law enforcement, students, and legislators to end sexual assaults on college campuses..
