Former President Barack Obama Urges Michigan Voters to Support Gretchen Whitmer in New Radio Ad - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE POSTED ON [DATE REMOVED] 1, 2018 BY ADAM FOX-LONG Former President Barack Obama Urges Michigan Voters to Support Gretchen Whitmer in New Radio Ad DETROIT — Today the Whitmer for Governor campaign began airing a radio ad featuring former President Barack Obama. The 60-second ad focuses on Whitmer’s work as Senate Democratic Leader to expand Medicaid to more than 680,000 Michiganders and her plans to clean up our drinking water and improve education and skills training. “I’m so proud to have the support of President Obama because this election is so crucial for Michiganders,” said Whitmer. “Health care is on the ballot this [DATE REMOVED]. Clean drinking water and good schools for our kids are on the ballot. It’s so important that everyone gets out and votes so we can start solving problems for the people of our state. Let’s get it done.” “Gretchen Whitmer is keeping her foot on the gas and doing everything she can to turn out voters and help elect Democrats up and down the ballot,” said Whitmer for Governor Deputy Communications Director Eileen Belden. “Meanwhile, Republicans are abandoning Bill Schuette left and right, and his campaign has cancelled ad buys across the state as Michiganders reject his record of trying to rip health care away from hundreds of thousands of people.” CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE AD AD SCRIPT: PRESIDENT OBAMA: “This is Barack Obama. In this election, the health of millions is on the ballot. The character of our country is on the ballot. And your vote can make the difference. As Senate Leader, Gretchen Whitmer worked to raise the minimum wage and expand Medicaid so that 680,000 people now have health care. That’s huge. Gretchen believes, like I do, that every child deserves a good school and safe water to drink. And she has a plan to give people the skills and training they need to get good jobs, starting in high school. You’re not going to have to wonder if she’ll protect your health care or fight for good jobs, good wages, and good schools. She’s proven that she will. Gretchen never gives up. So make a plan for [DATE REMOVED] and take some friends with you to vote for Gretchen Whitmer. Let’s bring it home, Michigan.” NARRATOR: “Find your polling place and vote [DATE REMOVED] 6th between [DATE REMOVED] and [DATE REMOVED]. Paid for by Gretchen Whitmer for Governor.” ### Share this post: Share Tweet Email Post navigation  Previous Post Whitmer Campaign Raises Record-Breaking $8 Million in 2018 Next Post   TV Stations in Grand Rapids, Flint, Traverse City Pull Down False DeVos Attack Ads Against Whitmer Meet Gretchen Meet Garlin Issues News Volunteer Events Media Store Donate JOIN GRETCHEN Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Medium P.O. Our Freedoms - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE Our Freedoms HOME ISSUES OUR FREEDOMS We in Michigan once had some of the strongest civil rights protections in the country in the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, but we’ve fallen behind. We’ve got to show up for each other’s fights so that every Michigander, no matter where they come from, who they love, how they identify, or what their faith is, has the same opportunities to be successful and we cannot stop until they do. That means ensuring equity in employment, opportunity, schools, and safety for all people. We are still fighting for fundamental rights when people in our state can be denied housing or terminated from employment for their sexual orientation or gender identity. We will build justice in Michigan by: Expanding the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act. Year after year, in the Senate and as a private citizen, I pushed to expand our civil rights laws to include all people regardless of  sexual orientation and gender identity. We drew the line when lawmakers tried to exclude transgender people from our civil rights laws. And I fought for same-sex adoptions and domestic partner benefits. Promoting universal voter access, because it is too hard to register and to vote in Michigan, and as a result, fewer people do it. Everyone who applies for a driver’s license or state ID should be automatically registered to vote, and any registered voters should be able to vote absentee or by mail. As a legislator, I fought to ensure valid ballots from our service members overseas were counted, to prevent voters from being turned away at the polls, and to allow same-day voter registration. Level the playing field in our criminal justice system so that the amount of money in your bank account does not determine the level of justice you receive. As Ingham County Prosecutor, I prioritized rehabilitation programs for nonviolent, first-time offenders to save resources, reduce overcrowding in prisons, and most importantly, to give people [DATE REMOVED] chance. Ban the box so that fair hiring practices prevent disparities in our criminal justice system from keeping people out of the labor pool. Ending this discriminatory practice will put thousands of women and men back into stable, good-paying jobs. Refuse to allow bullying on the grounds of religion. It’s a false choice to say that we can’t have religious freedom while still respecting one another. I’m proud of the work I did to protect our kids in schools with Matt’s Safe Schools law, but we have much more work to do. Making government smarter and more effective by empowering a diverse set of voices in the cabinet, appointments, and throughout state government. That means creating an Equity Officer in the Governor’s office and empowering the Department of Civil Rights and the Civil Rights Commission.
