Michigan Firefighters: Bill Schuette is Bad for Retirees - Gretchen Whitmer for Governor46%Skip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE POSTED ON OCTOBER 4, 2018 BY ZACK POHL Michigan Firefighters: Bill Schuette is Bad for Retirees DETROIT – Today the President of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union Mark Docherty issued the following statement commenting on Bill Schuette’s record of supporting the Retirement Tax on Michigan seniors: “Bill Schuette can’t hide from his record of giving tax breaks to his wealthy friends at the expense of hardworking Michigan families. The tax plan Schuette supported in 2011 included the Retirement Tax, which has cost seniors who worked hard their whole lives thousands in new taxes they can’t afford. Schuette even said that plan was ‘great news for Michiganders.’ No matter how hard he tries to rewrite his record, Michigan firefighters know that Bill Schuette is bad for retirees, bad for our families, and bad for Michigan.” Former Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer has been endorsed by the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union, the Michigan Association of Police Organizations, and the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police. The Opioid Crisis - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE The Opioid Crisis HOME ISSUES THE OPIOID CRISIS The opioid crisis attacking our communities is a tragedy and a disease. Overdose deaths in Michigan from opioid abuse jumped 54% in just [DATE REMOVED]. We cannot blame the victims of this disease. We must put aside partisan differences to confront this crisis head on. In Michigan, we must take action immediately to: Expand treatment and recovery services. that help our family members and neighbors who are suffering from addiction. I will bring together community partners, medical professionals, state leaders, the federal government, and health providers to increase inpatient treatment services. Partner with law enforcement and pharmacies to continue building on and expanding permanent drug take-back programs to dispose of unneeded controlled substances. Invest in treatment courts to ensure access to the resources we need to treat addiction, including diversion and alternative sentencing. As Ingham County Prosecutor, I established policies to make sure that people with addictions could get connected to treatment, instead of going to jail. As Governor, I will continue to fund and support treatment courts. Hold physicians and drug companies accountable because Michigan has more annual opioid prescriptions than people, and we cannot allow pharmaceutical companies to continue perpetuating the crisis with immunity. And it wasn’t close. No matter how hard he tries, Bill Schuette can’t hide from his record of joining nine lawsuits to rip health care away from 680,000 Michiganders and ignoring 15 complaints to his office on the Flint water crisis. [DATE REMOVED] Gretchen stayed focused on the issues that matter most to Michigan families, like finally fixing the damn roads, cleaning up our drinking water, and getting our kids the skills they need to help our kids compete for good-paying jobs, and that’s exactly what she’ll do as our next governor.” ### Share this post: Share Tweet Email Post navigation  Previous Post Black Economic Alliance endorses Gretchen Whitmer for Governor Next Post   Detroit Regional Chamber Endorses Gretchen Whitmer Over Bill Schuette for Governor Meet Gretchen Meet Garlin Issues News Volunteer Events Media Store Donate JOIN GRETCHEN Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Medium P.O.
