Desperate Schuette Doubles Down on Shameful Nassar Attack Ad - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2018 BY ADAM FOX-LONG Desperate Schuette Doubles Down on Shameful Nassar Attack Ad Chief Dunlap: “worked closely with Whitmer’s office… to achieve the best possible outcome for the survivors of Larry Nassar.” LANSING — Today former Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer stood with Michigan sheriffs, prosecutors, and Nassar survivors to set the record straight regarding her role in the Larry Nassar case. Schuette responded at a press conference [DATE REMOVED] doubling down on the Michigan Republican Party’s repugnant ad attacking Whitmer, a rape survivor, for her role in bringing Larry Nassar to justice. Today MSU Chief of Police James Dunlap told the Detroit News that he worked closely with Whitmer to help deliver the best possible outcome for the survivors. As Prosecutor, Whitmer got the warrants that ultimately brought the first [DATE REMOVED] sentence against Larry Nassar. “Not only is Bill Schuette spreading lies about Gretchen’s long record as a fighter for survivors, but he refuses to condemn the Michigan Republican Party for their disgusting ad,” said Nassar survivor Jane Katzer. “Now, my family and I have to worry every time we turn on the TV or open a web browser that we’re going to see the face of the man who abused me. Bill Schuette is a lowlife who would lie to distort a sexual assault survivor’s record on sexual assault in order to try and win an election. He needs to stop playing politics and demand that the Michigan Republican Party take this repulsive ad down.” FACT: Nassar’s crimes took place in multiple jurisdictions “Both Whitmer and Schuette have said publicly that because the sex crimes were committed in multiple jurisdictions, the state Attorney General’s Office was the right office to handle their prosecution.” –Bridge Truth Squad FACT: MSU Chief Dunlap told the Detroit News today he “worked closely with Whitmer’s office… to achieve the best possible outcome for the survivors of Larry Nassar.” Today MSU Police Chief Jim Dunlap told the Detroit News “his department worked closely with Whitmer’s office, Schuette’s office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Michigan, which handled the federal charges. ‘Those efforts were meant to achieve the best possible outcome for the survivors of Larry Nassar,’ Dunlap said in a statement, ‘and by all objective accounts those efforts were successful.’” FACT: Ingham County Prosecutor’s office did not receive detailed police reports “Lisa McCormick, chief assistant prosecutor for Ingham County, confirmed Whitmer’s account of events to Truth Squad. McCormick said the office never received police reports, warrant requests or witness lists from MSU’s police department that would have allowed county prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. ‘There is no way for a prosecutor to charge someone without the warrant request, the witness list and the police report,” she said, adding: “It would be unethical to do otherwise.’” –Bridge Truth Squad FACT: Whitmer told Dunlap “we share the dual goal of protecting the victim and ensuring we are successful in getting maximum penalty for the defendant.” “In [DATE REMOVED] email exchange between Whitmer and Dunlap, first requested under Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act by Gongwer News Service, and provided to Truth Squad, Whitmer told the chief her office was ‘eager to read any and all police reports you send our way. I believe we share the dual goals of protecting the victim and ensuring we are successful in getting the maximum penalty for the defendant,’ she wrote on [DATE REMOVED]. ‘And while I understand your desire to make an arrest as soon as possible, I hope you understand that we think it is important to flesh out the issues in the case now that the (U.S. attorney’s office) is involved.’” –Bridge Truth Squad # # # Share this post: Share Tweet Email Post navigation  Previous Post Law Enforcement, Prosecutors, Nassar Survivors Call on Schuette to Denounce Shameful GOP Attack Ad Next Post   VIDEO: Schuette Refuses Three Times to Pull Repulsive Nassar Attack Ad Meet Gretchen Meet Garlin Issues News Volunteer Events Media Store Donate JOIN GRETCHEN Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Medium P.O. Serving our Veterans - Gretchen Whitmer for GovernorSkip to content Stand with Michigan against hate. CONTRIBUTE TODAY! X Gretchen Whitmer for Governor About Issues News Media Store DONATE Serving our Veterans HOME ISSUES SERVING OUR VETERANS We should be ashamed when the men and women who stepped up to serve our nation are forced to wait months for the care they earned, or face homelessness when they return home. I have a long record fighting for Michigan’s 700,000 men and women in uniform whose sacrifices keep us safe, and I’ll hold government accountable for the lack of respect for our veterans that led to incompetence, neglect, and tragedy at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. As governor, I will honor our men and women who served in uniform by: Engaging Valuable Veteran Experience. We must capitalize on the dedicated talent that our veterans have to offer and close the skills gap by working with the US Department of Labor to increase the number of occupations with eligible apprenticeships and leverage federal funding to do this through the GI Bill. We will work with the National Guard to coordinate training to align with occupational skills and require every state agency to be a veteran friendly employer. We will help build careers for veterans and match qualified vets to many of Michigan’s need-to-fill positions. Putting training to work because the men and women who bravely defend our country have every right to serve their families and communities with honor and earn a good living. We owe our veterans every opportunity, and must connect them to the paths that lead to good-paying jobs when they return home. Let’s get veterans back into the workforce, help them find jobs, fast-track certification programs, and reduce barriers to opening a business. Improving care by putting our veterans ahead of politics to make sure they get the benefits and medical care they deserve, including mental health services, addiction care, and counseling. One veteran suicide is too many, and we must do better for our servicemen and women who face the difficult transition of returning home. Michigan has let our veterans down in Grand Rapids, where trained nurses were replaced by a private contractor, leading to the neglect and abuse of our veterans. As Governor, I’ll work across party lines to get more medical staff in veterans homes, increase oversight for service providers, and end the privatization of services for our veterans that led to tragedy. Returning home should not mean housing uncertainty for our nation’s heroes. I will work with our state housing agency and Michigan banks to help veterans take maximum advantage of VA home mortgage loans, especially in our urban communities.
